Frankfurt/Germany, July 2nd, 2020 – Cartel authorities have approved the cooperation agreed in April by Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH (Haniel) and Emma – The Sleep Company (Emma). Accordingly, Haniel holds a 50.1 percent stake in Emma since 1 July 2020. Manuel Müller and Dr. Dennis Schmoltzi, founders and CEOs of Emma, hold the remaining shares at a 24.95 percent each. Emma is Haniel’s first direct investment in their new “People” portfolio segment, which is focused on the overarching themes of health and well-being. With its mission to redefine sleep quality and optimize it through technology-driven innovation, Emma is making an active contribution to this segment. Together, the two companies aim to further accelerate Emma’s rapid growth.
“In terms of content, we had a first match when it came to the role of healthy sleep in relation to a higher quality of life,” explained Schmoltzi, founder and Co-CEO of Emma, looking back to the initial talks with Haniel CEO Thomas Schmidt. “We also quickly realized that we had similar or complementary ideas regarding corporate culture, operational management and technological progress. The appreciation for ‘our’ way of building and developing Emma, combined with the preservation of our entrepreneurial freedom, finally convinced Manuel and me. In Haniel, we are gaining a financially strong, long-term oriented partner who will support us with his structural know-how and with whom we can simultaneously shape agility in a broader context,” emphasized Schmoltzi.
Haniel is also convinced of a synergetic cooperation. “Emma has achieved impressive growth in recent years and we strongly believe in the prospects of the market and Emma as a company. I was particularly impressed by the founders, who put a unique focus on talent and leadership. We can still learn a lot from this, and it will help to accelerate our transformation – in terms of value development and, above all, culture”, stated Thomas Schmidt, Haniel CEO.
