5 Tips for Buying a Mattress

1. Make sure to test the mattress thoroughly 

The body may need a few days to several weeks to get used to a new mattress. Hence, a mattress should be tested over a longer periodTrialing products instore is a good start, but you usually do not test the mattress there in the same positions you actually sleep inTesting it over many nights in your everyday life is therefore more crucial to making an informed decision. 

2. Take guidance from independent consumer institutions testing 

The independent institute tests product quality including mattresses in many different categories. The test results can help you in making a decision, as they consider a wide range of different criteria and are based on neutral evaluation. 

3.  Look for breathable materials 

You should also consider the temperature-regulating properties of a mattress, when making your purchase decision, as this can affect the quality of your sleep. The onset of sleep usually coincides with a drop in the core body temperature as the human body releases any excess heat. Consequently, breathable materials are important for creating an ideal sleeping climate. A recent study1 demonstrated that people who slept on a temperatureregulating mattress had more regular and pronounced sleep cycles than people who slept on a conventional mattress. These people also experienced more phases of deep sleep in the second half of the night. During deep sleep phases, we are very relaxed, our breathing and heartbeat slow down. In this phase the body and the immune system regenerate, growth hormones are released, and facts are stored in the brain. The mattress cover should therefore be light and breathable and be able to release moisture quickly. For reasons of hygiene it should also be washable.  

4. Consider ergonomic posture 

So the body can regenerate overnight, the best possible pressure relief should be ensured. This is the only way to protect the joints and spine during sleep. Our intervertebral discs lose fluid during the day due to the weight they carry. At night they fill up with fluid again. For this purpose, it must be ensured that the spine is straight and in its natural position when lying down. The mattress must yield more in some places, so that, for example, the shoulder can sink deeper than the pelvis. For this reason, modern mattresses have different zones. Depending on body size or weight, the firmness of a mattress can also determine whether you lie in an ergonomically correct position, as this influences how much you sink in. Interestingly, studies show that people have generally found the right degree of firmness to be ‘medium hard’.  

 5. Adjust the pillow to the mattress

The way we sleep, whether that’s on our back, stomach or side, our body weight and the firmness of the mattress determine which type of pillow will suit us best. The ergonomic posture also plays a decisive role here: the cervical spine should not bend. This means that the head should be neither too high nor too low. Since most people can be considered mixed sleepers and change their sleeping position several times during the night, a good pillow should be flexible  for example, have a harder and a softer side and be variable in height thanks to removable inner layers. It is generally advisable to ask a friend or partner to check the position of your spine while you’re in your preferred sleeping position. Most people instinctively have an eye for whether a thick or a thin pillow is necessary for a person to lie ergonomically. Hence, when buying a new mattress, the lying position should best be checked while you’re using your pillow.
